If by talent you mean that I'm to stubborn to quit before I've reached my goal, then, yes, I have talent.

Anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly first.

When folks look at my work, they frequently comment,  "Oh, you're so talented.  I could never do that."  Well, it just ain't so!

Very few, if any, of us start off as masters of a skill: skills are learned.  I've never heard of anyone who developed a signature without practice.  The physical act of drawing or painting is no different: it is just a mechanical skill.  It can be learned by anyone whos has the desire and is willing to put in the time and effort.

To show what I mean, there is a history of my self-portraits below.  It should be obvious that I did not possess "talent" when I began.  However, with hard work and acres of paper, I've been able to reach a level of mastery that, while not perfect, is pleasing to me.

So if you have the desire to learn to draw, get out there and do it.  Read books, attend classes, and above all put pencil to paper!

This is my first self-portrait, done in 1993.  This was not intended to look like a Picasso!  I simply hadn't developed the necessary hand-eye coordination or the facility for seeing required to get a likeness.   This is my second self-portrait, done from memory at about the same time as the one above. These experiences just about convinced me that I would never be able to draw the human head.

This series was my next attempt at self-portraiture, done in 2001.  In the intervening 8 years I had drawn quite a bit and learned how to construct the basic human head.  The picture at right was a fairly reasonable likeness.

These three were done in 2002.  I had made a commitment to myself to do portrait and figurative work and really worked at seeing myself rather than drawing what I thought was there.  None of these is perfect, but I'm pleased with all three and I can see progress in each one.
